Anderson High subscriber benefits program starts

Thanks to the efforts of dedicated Anderson High parents, a new subscriber benefit program has begun to pay off for the school and its teachers. When subscribing online using www.westaustinnews.com, Anderson subscribers can mark a box indicating they are Anderson parents or students.

Anderson parents who subscribe to the West Austin News for the regular annual rate of $45 will see $20 of that total donated by the West Austin News to the Anderson UIL Teacher Support Fund.

Anderson Principal Donna Houser writes, "UIL academic competitions test the content knowledge and critical thinking skills of our top high school scholars. Many school districts are able to fund teachers who teach a full year class to prepare students for these competitions. AISD has never funded this type of preparation, so teachers typically come in after hours to prepare students for the competitions without receiving compensation. The teachers attend the academic competitions with our students, again without pay, and without support for hotels, travel, or meals. Local campus budgets are stretched to help teachers attend so that students can have support at the competitions.

Even without support and without the advantage of a year-long preparation class during the school day, Anderson students typically do quite well. In the past, students have qualified for both district and state competitions in several categories of debate, math, and writing. Imagine what could be done if teachers were encouraged to begin the preparation early and continue preparation weekly until the spring competitions? Supporting our teachers with hourly pay for their commitment to these students after their teaching day would be a great gift. Support for lodging, travel and food during the competitions would also be a gift to these dedicated teachers."
